The Accra Metropolitan Assembly has announced that the planned rehabilitation of the Kaneshie footbridge will take between six and nine months. The bridge, which was closed on Thursday, April 2, is undergoing urgent repairs following years of structural deterioration.
Speaking on Channel One TV on April 6, Gilbert Nii Ankrah said the bridge forms part of a wider road improvement programme in the area and that this will be the first major overhaul since its construction.
“Currently, if you look at the state of the bridge, a lot more needs to be done. According to experts, we are looking at between six to nine months.
“The surrounding roads will also be closed for drainage works, so the entire area can be properly upgraded. Once the works are completed, the bridge will be fully functional for pedestrians and daily commuters,” he said.
Ankrah added that the renovations are designed to strengthen the bridge and extend its lifespan.
“The work being carried out will make the bridge more durable, and we expect it to last ten years or more,” he said.
Frank Nkansah attributed some of the structural deterioration to prolonged occupation by traders, which hindered routine maintenance.
He stated that essential components, including barriers and footings, have suffered extensive damage, showing significant rust and wear.
