The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the European Union (EU) have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation on regional stability, integration and the impact of global developments on West Africa.
This follows a high-level meeting held in Abuja on Monday 23 March 2026, between the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Omar Alieu Touray, and the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas.
The engagement focused on advancing collaboration in addressing shared regional challenges, particularly in the areas of security, economic stability and integration.
Both sides underscored the importance of preserving the gains made in regional integration, while strengthening coordinated responses to evolving security dynamics across West Africa.
They also discussed the socio-economic impact of global geopolitical developments on the region, with particular attention to food security and energy-related pressures.
The meeting reaffirmed the ECOWAS–EU partnership and its role in supporting efforts towards a stable, resilient and integrated West African region.

The two leaders further expressed a shared commitment to deepen strategic cooperation in addressing emerging regional and global challenges.
