Mahama orders doubling of security services recruitment to 40,000 personnel

President John Dramani Mahama has instructed that the ongoing recruitment into Ghana’s security services be expanded from 20,000 to 40,000 personnel over the next four years, in a move aimed at strengthening national security across the country.

The directive came during a high-level meeting convened with the Heads of Security Agencies, the Minister for the Interior, and the Acting Minister for Defence, where the President received a detailed briefing on the current recruitment process.

In addition to increasing the recruitment numbers, President Mahama emphasised that the process must uphold the principles of transparency and fairness, ensuring that all qualified applicants are treated equitably.

Officials in attendance included the Chief of Staff, Secretary to the President, Senior Presidential Advisor on Governmental Affairs, National Security Coordinator, Inspector General of Police, Director General of Prisons, Director General of the Fire Service, Comptroller-General of the Ghana Immigration Service, and the Director General of the Narcotics Control Commission.

Speaking on behalf of the Presidency, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, MP, Minister and Government Communications Spokesperson, confirmed the directives, highlighting the government’s commitment to strengthening security institutions and building a capable workforce to protect Ghana’s citizens.

The President’s instructions mark a significant scaling-up of the country’s security capacity, reflecting ongoing efforts to enhance law enforcement, border control, and emergency response services across all sectors.
