New Solar Panel Factory Opens in Paarl

Ener-G-Africa has unveiled its solar panel manufacturing facility in Paarl, Western Cape, opening its doors to installers and industry stakeholders as part of a broader push to strengthen local solar production in South Africa.

The launch comes at a turning point for the global solar sector. Supply chains are shifting, and manufacturing policies will change from April 2026, prompting countries to increase investment in local production to secure energy supply and expand industrial capacity. South Africa is following this trend, with new manufacturing capacity supporting a more reliable and diversified solar supply base.

“The recently released AFSIA Africa Solar Outlook report found that Africa is the fastest-growing solar market globally,” says EGA CEO Andre Moolman. “As the market matures, there is a growing need for consistency, quality, accountability and service. We believe local manufacturing has a critical role to play in meeting these expectations.”

Local Solar Manufacturing in a Competitive Market

According to the Africa Solar Outlook, solar uptake across the continent is likely higher than official figures suggest, particularly in the distributed and commercial sectors. Installers are driving much of this growth.

While pricing remains a factor, Moolman notes that installers increasingly prioritise dependable supply, proven product quality, and strong after-sales support over the lowest price.

“Against this backdrop, EGA positions itself as a local manufacturer built for long-term participation in the solar ecosystem,” he says. “Our Paarl facility is designed to offer manufacturing flexibility across multiple panel sizes and applications, backed by internationally accredited production standards and local technical support.”

The report also highlights a shift toward integrated solar-and-battery systems, as customers focus on reliability and energy security in regions where grid performance is constrained. Moolman says EGA aims to position itself as a solutions-driven manufacturer rather than solely a panel assembler.

Shifting Global Solar Supply Chains

Energy analyst and EE Business Intelligence MD Chris Yelland unpacked the global forces reshaping solar supply chains and the outlook for installers over the next three years. Changes to international export incentives and other policy adjustments are expected to affect global pricing, increasing the value of stable, locally based manufacturing partners that offer longer-term certainty.

Local Solutions for Residential, Commercial and Agricultural Solar

“EGA manufactures panels for residential, commercial and agricultural use and does not operate in the utility-scale segment,” says Moolman. “This allows us to remain focused on the installer market, where responsiveness, proximity and service are critical.”

He adds that the Paarl facility represents investment in infrastructure, people and processes. “With that comes accountability. If something goes wrong, we are here to engage, inspect, test and resolve it.”

Moolman believes the facility reflects a broader shift in the solar market. “As global supply chains evolve and pricing structures change, the role of stable, local manufacturing becomes increasingly important. Our focus is on building long-term capacity and accountability in the markets we serve, rather than chasing short-term volume.”
