Chief Justice pays courtesy call on Speaker Bagbin, proposes major judicial reforms

The Chief Justice, His Lordship Justice Baffoe-Bonnie, has paid a courtesy call on the Rt Hon Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, in what both leaders described as a significant step towards strengthening collaboration between the arms of government in consolidating Ghana’s democracy.

The visit, which took place at Parliament House on Monday morning, created an opportunity for high-level engagement on the future of justice delivery and institutional reforms within the judicial system.

Welcoming the Chief Justice, Speaker Bagbin described the visit as historic, noting that it reflected a shared responsibility between Parliament and the Judiciary to protect democratic governance and deepen accountability.

“This visit is historic and represents a call for stronger collaboration between our institutions in the collective effort to consolidate Ghana’s democracy,” the Speaker stated.

During the engagement, Chief Justice Baffoe-Bonnie outlined key reform priorities aimed at improving the efficiency of the justice system. These include expanding access to justice nationwide, introducing a shift system in court operations to reduce case backlog, and establishing specialised courts to deal with illegal mining (galamsey) and other infractions, particularly those highlighted by the Public Accounts Committee.

The Chief Justice also emphasised the need for reforms in legal education, advocating training models that respond to evolving societal demands and emerging technologies within the legal profession.

Beyond policy proposals, he appealed for institutional support to enable the Judiciary function effectively. He cited the need for secure office accommodation for judicial officers, improved security for judicial personnel, and faster administrative clearance to recruit additional staff and technical experts.

The meeting was marked by mutual respect and a shared commitment to public service, with both leaders underscoring the importance of sustained dialogue and targeted reforms to strengthen institutions that safeguard justice and democratic governance.
