GNFS tames Sefwi Juaboso market blaze

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has successfully contained a fire outbreak that swept through parts of the Sefwi Juaboso Market in the Western North Region in the early hours of Tuesday, January 6, 2026.

The commercial fire, which broke out near the Frankrab Cold Store, was reported to the Service at 3:07 a.m. By the time firefighters brought the situation under control, four wooden shops and one metal container store had been completely destroyed, with goods worth thousands of cedis believed to have been lost.

Despite challenges posed by a faulty fire engine, personnel from the Sefwi Juaboso Fire Station responded swiftly, arriving at the scene at 3:12 a.m. Armed with only portable fire extinguishers and supported by residents and traders in the area, the firefighters managed to contain the blaze at about 4:33 a.m. The fire was fully extinguished at 5:02 a.m.

Preliminary investigations by the Fire Service point to an electrical fault as the likely cause of the fire. No injuries or fatalities were recorded.

The District Fire Officer, DO II Emmanuel Miah, was present at the scene to provide operational support and coordinate response efforts.

The incident has once again raised concerns about the state of firefighting logistics in regional and district capitals, particularly the recurring challenge of unserviceable fire tenders, which continue to hamper emergency response across the country.

The GNFS has urged market operators and the general public to ensure proper electrical wiring and adhere strictly to fire safety measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
