World Gold Council, GoldBod hold high-level talks on ASM formalisation and gold traceability

The World Gold Council (WGC) has held a strategic engagement with the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) as part of efforts to formalise Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining (ASM) and strengthen traceability across Ghana’s gold value chain.

The meeting, held earlier on Tuesday in Accra, brought together the Chief Executive Officer of the World Gold Council, David Tait, and the Chief Executive Officer of GoldBod, Sammy Gyamfi Esq., alongside members of the GoldBod Governing Board.

Discussions focused on aligning Ghana’s ASM sector with international best practices, particularly in areas of responsible mining, transparency, and traceability from production to export.

According to information released after the engagement, both sides examined measures aimed at improving oversight of ASM operations, which remain a significant contributor to Ghana’s gold output but continue to pose regulatory and environmental challenges.

The meeting also explored proposals for strategic partnerships between GoldBod and the World Gold Council, including plans to establish commercially viable and environmentally sustainable gold processing plants in Ghana dedicated to ASM gold.

Such facilities, officials say, would help reduce reliance on unsafe processing methods, improve gold recovery rates, and enhance Ghana’s credibility in the global gold market through verifiable supply chains.

The engagement forms part of broader efforts by GoldBod to reposition Ghana’s gold sector, curb illegal mining, and ensure that gold produced in the country meets evolving international standards on responsible sourcing.

Ghana remains Africa’s leading gold producer, with the ASM sector accounting for a significant share of total output, making formalisation and traceability central to the country’s mining and export strategy.
