Osimhen Becomes Super Eagles Assistant Captain, Nwabali Wears New Look Ahead Of AFCON 2025

Victor Osimhen has been appointed the Super Eagles’ main assistant captain, marking a significant shift in leadership as Nigeria prepare for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The Galatasaray striker will deputise for newly appointed captain Wilfred Ndidi and has also been handed responsibility as the team’s new first-choice penalty taker.

The changes follow the international retirement of former skipper William Troost-Ekong, who previously wore the armband and was Nigeria’s designated man from the spot.

Naija News reports that Ndidi was officially confirmed as the Super Eagles’ new leader on December 19, 2025.

Aside from Osimhen and Ndidi, other most experienced figures in the squad are Alex Iwobi and Moses Simon, who have both been part of the Super Eagles setup for close to a decade. Iwobi currently stands as the most capped player in the team, with Simon next in line.

Away from the captaincy developments, Super Eagles first-choice goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has also caught attention ahead of Nigeria’s opening fixture against Tanzania at the 2025 AFCON.

The Chippa United shot stopper has unveiled a striking blonde hairstyle. The new appearance is being seen as a statement of confidence as the tournament approaches.

The 29-year-old has grown into a central figure for Nigeria since breaking into the squad at AFCON 2023, where he impressed with four clean sheets. The former Enyimba and Katsina United goalkeeper played a key role in that campaign and remains a trusted presence between the posts.

Nwabali is expected to flaunt the new hairstyle when the Super Eagles take on Tanzania at 6:30 p.m. later today, December 23.
