President John Dramani Mahama has formally asked Parliament’s Majority leadership to withdraw a Private Member’s Bill seeking to repeal the law that established the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).
The President’s request, announced Thursday by his spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu, aligns with his recent public commitment to strengthen the anti-corruption agency. President Mahama had expressed support for the OSP as a “vital cog in the fight against corruption” during a meeting with the National Peace Council on Wednesday.
While advocating for the office to be maintained, the President also renewed his call for the OSP to intensify its efforts. He urged the office to take more decisive action to build public confidence and confront corruption head-on, in keeping with the original objectives behind its creation.
The move to withdraw the repeal bill signals the administration’s intent to preserve the key anti-graft institution, albeit with expectations for enhanced performance from its officials.
