Passion Air warns of major disruptions amid jet fuel shortage

Passion Air has alerted the travelling public to possible delays and cancellations on its flight schedules due to an anticipated shortage of aviation fuel at the Kotoka International Airport in Accra.

The Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), in a NOTAM issued on 22 July 2025, confirmed a looming shortfall in jet fuel supply from Wednesday, 22 July to Sunday, 27 July.

This development, which raises serious questions about Ghana’s fuel security and the readiness of its aviation infrastructure, has left domestic travellers scrambling for alternatives. Passion Air, one of Ghana’s leading local carriers, says the situation could significantly disrupt its operations, with many flights likely to be grounded or rescheduled.

“The fuel shortage is beyond our control,” the airline stated in a press release, noting that it is doing everything possible to mitigate the impact. “We urge our passengers to stay updated through our customer service hotline: 0800 221 221.”

While Passion Air has apologised for the inconvenience, critics say this is another symptom of systemic failure in energy logistics and a clear sign that relevant agencies may not be coordinating effectively to prevent such nationwide disruptions.

Aviation experts are also raising alarms about the ripple effects on business, tourism, and emergency travel. As of now, there has been no official word from the Energy Ministry or the National Petroleum Authority on what led to the shortage or how soon it can be resolved.

Passengers are being advised to monitor flight schedules and make contingency plans as the crisis unfolds.
